SOURCES, RESOURCES, & INSPIRATION

FROM THE ARTIST

I translate pieces of the natural world, moments in time or place, into imagery - visual essays, visual poetry. In a process parallel to writing, I summarize aspects of the observed world which at any moment is stunning, visceral, tragic, renewable, breathtaking.

Flying since childhood, I still sketch from window seats. Learning to pilot small planes expanded my sense of space, creating a physical immersion in light and color unique to low altitude flight. Aerial perspective, layers of light, atmosphere, floating marks and shapes, macro closeups permeate much of my work.

Professional grants, sabbaticals and residencies provided for work in Latin America, primarily Mexico and Costa Rica, as well as Europe. I am fortunate to travel widely for long stretches of time. I owe much to Mexico, a profound influence in re-configuring my practice.

Sabbaticals enabled me to pursue lo-tech, non-toxic printmaking in challenging tropical and sub-tropical environments. Later, Selby Gardens, Spanish Point, Myakka River State Park, became key to sourcing imagery.

From 2019 - 2020, I undertook an arduous but rewarding job of relocating my studio from Boston to subtropical Sarasota, exactly as the pandemic shut down the world. Finally, early 2022, I opened my current downtown studio.
